If you are in a car accident what should you do?

Every year thousands of motorists flood the roads as they venture off to their holiday destination. However, accidents do happen and in such an event it’s important to know what to do for your own safety and to ensure that your insurance claim is processed quickly and smoothly.

·       According to Arrive Alive South Africa after you’ve had a collision you should first park in a safe position off the road and turn on your hazard lights and headlights. (Any and all lighting that may help other motorists see that there has been an accident and slowdown is necessary. Don’t put your bright lights on as this may temporarily blind oncoming motorists). Arrive Alive add that if the accident is on a blind rise or bend, parking your vehicle back from the accident in a ‘fend-off’ position so vehicles see the accident scene may help prevent further accidents. Highlight the area to other motorists by putting warning triangles out on the street demarcating the accident.
·       If people are injured call ER24 on 084 124 and the nearest police station.
·       Exchange details with the person you have had an accident with. Ask for their phone numbers, address details and ID number, if possible their insurance details and their drivers licence.
·       Make sure you have your broker’s number with you. If you are a PSG Konsult client then you should have the PSG Konsult Assist number with you too.
·       Don’t admit liability.
·       Report the accident/theft to the police within 24 hours.
