A few months ago the Pretoria News ran the headline, "You are not safe in your home!" The article then went on to reveal alarming crime statistics for Pretoria East. The facts are that crime is on the increase and we all need to remember that we are ultimately responsible for our own security. Living in the GSP, one can become complacent with regards to security, but rather, we need to be vigilant and not let our guard down.

In our current situation, we all have a shared responsibility for our own and our neighbours well being and security. An incident that occurred a few weeks ago highlights the importance of being considerate towards our fellow residents. A domestic worker walking in Aurelia Street was viciously attacked by a dog. It was only due to the quick intervention of residents in the area, that her life was saved. This woman will not be able to work for several months. We need to ask ourselves how this reflects on us as a community. We need to feel safe to walk our own streets. Safe from criminals and safe from vicious dogs. Please be considerate and do not let your dogs rush into the street when you arrive home.

We, as a community, have evolved from being a crime-ridden neighbourhood with little regard for one another into a community that is far more secure and one that is aware of our neighbours. As we continue to engage with one another, we become aware of an underlying and extremely necessary value system that improves our co-existence and continues to develop as we contribute towards our shared security.

The freedom and security that we have achieved does come at a price. It requires that we constantly examine our personal situation and make adjustments' if necessary to accommodate our fellow residents.

We need to understand that it is not acceptable to speed recklessly through our streets, to litter our pavements and streets, to let unleashed dogs roam the streets, to intimidate the guards at the boom gates and make no effort toward our collective security. Being inconsiderate in this regard always means that someone else has to pay the price or has to shoulder the burden.

Security arrangement for December.

Although extra precautionary measures will be implemented to beef up security in the GSP over the December period, please remember that we need to taken personal responsibility for our own safety. We often ignore the most basic precautions and then have to pay the price for this negligence. Some basic precautions to follow if you are leaving your property un-attended:

Minimize access to your property; activate alarm systems and advise neighbours and the GSP office that you will be away and leave contact details. If possible park vehicles within your fenced area. Ensure that valuables are not left visible in the vehicle. Do not leave lap tops, cell phones or anything of value next to windows.

Arthur Street and Werd Street Exits

Please note that both gates will be locked from 12th December 2009 until 4 January, 2010. It has come to our attention that several residents are allowing their domestic servants to use their vehicle cards to gain access. When we re-open in January this will be monitored and vehicle cards used for pedestrian movement will be cancelled. Please work with us on this one. Any uncontrolled pedestrian movement through the area poses a serious security risk.

Hesteleen Street Park.

It was with great dismay that we, as residents, noticed that the Parks Division of the Town Council dumped several loads of rubble in the Hesteleen Park. The GSP Directorate raised the matter with the Parks Division and was informed that they intend to landscape the park. Apparently they also intend putting in playground equipment.

The intention of developing the Park has security and other implications for GSP. This intention was never discussed with the GSP Directorate. The plans will be presented to the Directorate and we will ensure that this does not compromise our security. Residents will be informed once we have more information.

Condolences

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Els and Panowich families on their recent bereavements. We pray that God will be with them and strengthen them through this difficult time.

In conclusion, we wish to thank residents for their fantastic response to our recent recycling drive. It was certainly gratifying to see how well our community as a whole responded to this worthwhile cause.

We take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and peaceful festive season and may you all have a prosperous 2010.
