GARSFONTEIN SECURA PARK

NATURE CONSERVATION

14 SEPTEMBER 2010

This last year has seen some improvement in the upkeep of the spruit area by Tshwane Nature Conservation Department. Adelene Mare has done all within her power within the limits of her budget. We wish it could be more, but her hands are tied by senior officials who do not seem to see the necessity for mainteining our natural heritage.

The spruit cleanup undertaken by volunteers from our area netted 18 bags of rubbish collected along the waterway. Thank you to those seven families of our community who turned out. 7 out of nearly three hundred were rather disappointing however. Just imagine what we could do with the area if more people took an interest.

The large weeping willow that blew down in the middle of the spruit last August has finally been cut up an removed. Thanks to Richard Ndlovu and his staff.

Tshwane again surprised us by removing a large tree from Hesteleen Park with no explanation for the reason for doing so. This has upset some of our residents and we are still waiting for an explanation.

I have receiveed written permission from Adelene Mare to put up a few owl boxes in the spruit area. Councilor Karen Meyer has given her backing and will take the matter further.

We are still bothered by vagrants in the spruit area and the police are again looking into the problem. It appears that they are unable to arrest them unless they have been found guilty of some crime or other.

The three items raised last year, i.e.

  • A pond for waterfowl,
  • A tea garden, and
  • The leveling of the Adela side of the spruit has not taken off, although I am still negotiating with the interested parties on all three issues.

I look forward to a few cleanups before Christmas. Please come and join us.
